International Socialist Alternative (ISA) is an international association of Trotskyist political parties.
ISA was founded by sections on one side of a split in the Committee for a Workers' International (CWI).
History
In 2018 and 2019, a dispute within the Committee for a Workers' International developed around the questions of socialism and identity politics.[1]
One group founded the “In Defence of a Working Class and Trotskyist CWI” (IDWCTCWI) faction, which considers itself a continuance of the original CWI, using the same name.[2]
A second group, in support of the majority of the CWI's International Executive Committee, later renamed itself International Socialist Alternative and also considers itself the continuance of the original CWI.[2][3]
ROSA campaign
[Outdated information, ROSA has disaffiliated from ISA since 2024][citation pending review]
The ROSA campaign is an international socialist feminist campaign named after Rosa Luxemburg and Rosa Parks aims to build the socialist-feminist wing of the Labour movement.[4] 25 November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which Rosa marked in 2021 with demonstrations in at least two cities. [5][6] In Taiwan the occasion was marked by an ISA demonstration in support of Peng Shuai, who disappeared after accusing former Chinese vice premier Zhang Gaoli of sexual abuse.[7]
ROSA is a pro-choice organisation.[8] The Irish section of ROSA has taken part in a number of demonstrations in relation to abortion rights. This has included public demonstrations calling for the repeal of the Eighth Amendment, which restricted access to abortion in the Republic of Ireland.[9] The section have also undertaken similar actions in Northern Ireland, where in May 2018 three ROSA activists publicly took abortion pills in defiance of Northern Ireland's strict abortion laws.[10] The section have also taken part in demonstrations related to gender-based violence, femicide, and violence against LGBT+ people.[11][12] Particular cases they have demonstrated over have included Natasha O'Brien and her case against a Defence Forces soldier who assaulted her, whose suspended sentence they saw as a symptom of a misogynistic justice system,[13] as well as a demonstration on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to show solidarity with Nikita Hand, who had recently won a civil case against MMA fighter Conor McGregor.[14][15]
ROSA is trans inclusive and supports trans rights.[16][17]
