In the spin-off games
Pokémon GO
In Pokémon GO, Gimmighoul Coins are used to evolve Gimmighoul into Gholdengo. Unlike other Evolution items, Gimmighoul Coins do not take up space in the player's Item Bag, and they cannot be discarded.
This item was originally called the ?????? Coin (Japanese: ??????コイン?????? Coin) prior to February 27, 2023. It first became available on November 5, 2022, immediately following Community Day Classic: Dratini, and a day before Gimmighoul's name was officially revealed.[3]
Effect
A player can evolve a Gimmighoul into Gholdengo if they have at least 999 Gimmighoul Coins in their Item Bag. Candy is not used for this Evolution, making Gimmighoul the only Pokémon in the game that evolves without Candy.
Prior to February 27, 2023, as the ?????? Coin, this item was categorized as a Key Item and served no purpose in-game. Collecting one from a golden PokéStop caused a Roaming FormGimmighoul to appear in the overworld, but it could not be caught until February 27, 2023.
Multiple Gimmighoul Coins appeared in The Terapagos I Don't Know. One was first discovered by Ludlow, but it was snatched from him almost immediately. Later, when Liko, Roy, and Dot encountered a Roaming FormGimmighoul, it dropped a coin upon running away, which was collected by Roy. He would then go on to collect a hatful of coins, which a Chest Form Gimmighoul he encountered later manipulated him into giving to it before leaving.
A Gimmighoul Coin first appeared in Raid! The Dark Crew Base!!, where Scarlet was revealed to be collecting them as part of her profession as a treasure hunter.
