Filbert Street is an east–west street on the north side of San Francisco, California. The street runs between The Embarcadero and The Presidio, and passes through the neighborhoods of the Northern Waterfront, Telegraph Hill, North Beach, Russian Hill, Golden Gate Valley, and Cow Hollow. Addresses on Filbert Street run from east to west.
The eastern portion of Filbert Street consists mainly of walkways and step streets. Going west from The Embarcadero, the first portion of Filbert Street is a walkway through Levi's Plaza. West of Sansome Street, there is a portion of Filbert Street that allows automobile traffic, however, this section is only a half-block dead-end street used mainly for parking. At the terminus of this cul-de-sac, the Filbert Steps begin, a residential step street that climbs Telegraph Hill over a series of 400 steps, with houses and public gardens on either side of the steps.[1][2] The steps continue past the south end of Pioneer Park, which surrounds Coit Tower.
At Kearny Street, near the top of Telegraph Hill, the drivable portion of Filbert Street begins. Going westward and down Telegraph Hill, Filbert Street runs by Saints Peter and Paul Church and the northern side of Washington Square in the North Beach neighborhood. Continuing past the large thoroughfare of Columbus Avenue, Filbert Street continues over Russian Hill.
Passing Van Ness Avenue, the street continues into Golden Gate Valley and Cow Hollow. At the southwest corner of the intersection with Webster Street is the Old Vedanta Society Temple, a building owned by the Vedanta Society and having the distinction of being the oldest Hindu temple in the United States. The building is known for its highly unusual architecture, being a Queen Anne Victorian structure, but having a series of towers with different rooftop types representing different styles of architecture from around the world, including castle-style battlements, onion domes, and roofs derived from temples in India.[3][4][5] The western terminus of Filbert Street is at Lyon Street, which runs along the eastern wall of The Presidio.
